Uplifting women to live and lead powerfully
our vision
Kaurageous Love was founded in the Fall of 2016 with a mission to create a community of dynamic and powerful women leaders in Sikh neighborhoods.
Our vision is to create an equitable and joyful world, free of injustice, in which Sikh women can thrive and succeed.
Our Story
Richmond Hill is a dynamic and culturally rich neighborhood, full of Punjabi immigrants, numerous gurdwaras, and lots of love. However, the unjust treatment of women, the increase in catcalling and sexual harassment, and the lack of strong female voices in the community sparked in us a need to create a community of women. We sought to fight the many archaic values that often present in many immigrant neighborhoods and use our resources to give back and help Richmond Hill flourish.
What began as workshops for young girls on topics such as body image, consent, and professional growth, has turned into an expansive multigenerational organization focused on building Sikh leaders and promoting community growth.
Inception
One of our pioneering and most successful workshops series is a recurrent Mother-Daughter workshop, created to bridge the generational gap and bring the feminist conversation into every home.
Since our founding, we have hosted the first LGBTQ panel to ever occur in a Sikh religious site and actively try to give space to different voices in order to promote progress and acceptance in the community. We host events covering mental health issues, substance use, and many other "taboo" topics. Members engage in keertan nights, and sangat bonding time to cultivate a strong sense on community.
social impact
As our members build deeper connections with their Sikhi and themselves through our workshops, they are further encouraged to use what they learn and engage greatly in our consistent seva efforts. During the Farmer's Protests in India, we were able to mobilize our members to call legislature, door to door canvas, and fundraise. Over the years we have also acted as frontline aid during the pandemic, feeding hundreds of families monthly at food pantries, providing PPE, COVID vaccines, and educational information in the zip code that was hardest hit during the pandemic (11419). We are also part of the NYC participatory budgeting team for 11419 to give voice to the Sikh community at a legislative level as well.
